Artist Statement

I was in school at Tyler School of Art.  In my second year I had this amazing professor who saw how I was painting. I was very tactile but very 2D.  He eommended that I paint in encaustic.  He disappeared briefly and came back with this overly xeroxed copy of this amazing form of painting. Encaustic.  One of the oldest and most dangerous ways of painting,  This was pre internet and I didn’t know anyone who painted in such a way. I taught myself from books how to make my own paint. How to paint with wax and fire.

In finding the medium, at 23 years old, I also found my artistic voice.  After all of these years, the medium still baffles and excites me. I also sometimes work in mixed media to keep things exciting.

Forgotten love letters embedded in wax, broken TV screens… there is so much unexpected fodder to create with directly in the path of life.

I absolutely love the process of creating, experimenting and losing my self in my work.

“The position of the artist is humble. He is essentially a channel.”
-Piet Mondrian
